This page is horribly out of date.

Because you care...
Below are the specs of my two computers. Mainly this is here for my own reference so when I forget something, I can check. But if you're building your own system, you might be interested in seeing what I'm happy with.

PAPAG
Papa-G is my Linux machine. Note that at the time of construction, early September 1998, this computer was awesome. Like any computer, though, it should be outdated by the time I put this page online.

Building PAPAG
This was perhaps the easiest system build that I've ever worked on. Getting all the parts and waiting for them all to arrive was the most stressful part. Once everything was here, the only conflict was that the A: drive in the BIOS had to be disabled and the boot order had to be changed to LSZIP/C instead of A/C. That enables the LS-120 drive to function as a boot drive and the system not to freeze looking for a "real" floppy drive.

I think the coolest thing about this system is when I go to shut it down, the whole thing actually shuts down. I had always thought that was just a gimmick in Gateway and Dell computers or something; I had never realized it's part of ATX. Another thing I like about ATX motherboards is that by putting the mouse on PS/2, you have an extra COM port free for my collection of gadgetry (digital camera, handheld PC, X-10 appliances, calculator link, etc...)

So, in conclusion--- congratulations Plug & Play... you almost work now! I'm impressed so far, let's see what 10 years brings.

This picture doesn't do my lovely system any justice whatsoever, but here it is all the same. Enjoy. I'll take pictures of individual components later, perhaps. Perhaps? Okay, probably not.

DOZER
Dozer is my Windows computer. I use it for Office and testing web pages in Internet explorer, and whenever Linux can't do something as well. I built this computer quickly and cheaply, with a planning time of about 3 days, so if it's not perfect for December 1999, who cares... I bought it to bring up Microsoft Word, and it does that just fine. I'll upgrade it in time. I didn't want to go leading edge on this machine like I did last time because I just wanted it to work without headaches from day one, and be able to run Linux, Windows, and
BeOS on it without troubles.

Brief Dozer Specs
I'm too lazy to type out all the components for this machine like I did for the last one, so here's a basic list of components:

  • Intel Celeron 466 Mhz CPU (they were out of Pentium III Coppermine parts)
  • Asus P3B-F Motherboard, Slot 1, BX, 1 AGP, 1 ISA, 6 PCI, 4 DIMMS, ATX Form Factor
  • 128 MB PC100 Memory
  • Voodoo3 3500 TV video card & 3d accelerator
  • Same case & keyboard as PAPAG.
  • Same monitor, the ADI 19" 6P ... very nice.
  • Intel EtherExpress Pro 10/100
  • 10x slot-loading DVD/CD
  • SCSI controller from PAPAG (I moved it over, along with my burner)

Dozer's on the right.
